Marie Van Brittan Brown — The Short Version
Marie Van Brittan Brown was a Black nurse in Queens, New York who felt unsafe in her neighborhood and built the solution herself. Her 1966 invention — a system of cameras, monitors, and remote door controls — was patented in 1969 and became the direct foundation of every home security camera, CCTV network, and video doorbell on earth today. She identified a problem. She built the answer. Then history forgot her name.
