Andrew Jackson Beard was born enslaved. After emancipation, he built businesses, filed patents, and then invented the automatic railroad car coupler — saving the lives of thousands of workers who lost hands, arms, and lives every day connecting rail cars by hand. He saved an industry. The industry forgot his name.
Now you know. Wear that.
The Buillth Jenny Coupler tee is part of the Never Forget collection — wearable archives honoring the Black inventors who built the modern world and never got the credit.
The design: Full museum archive poster. Coupler jaw mechanism diagrams, automatic locking schematics, rail car connection force blueprints — the technical record of a Black inventor's most important work, presented as the historical document it deserves to be.
Wear it. They'll ask. Then you tell them.
The shirt: Heavyweight unisex tee. 100% ring-spun cotton. Soft enough to live in, bold enough to start a conversation. Tear-away label. Runs true to size.
Andrew Jackson Beard — The Short Version
Andrew Jackson Beard was born enslaved, became a successful inventor and businessman after emancipation, and in 1897 patented the automatic railroad car coupler — the Jenny Coupler — which allowed rail cars to connect without workers placing themselves between moving cars. Before his invention, railroad workers lost hands, arms, and lives doing this job every single day. He saved an industry that had enslaved his people. History forgot him anyway.
