Judy W. Reed was the first Black woman in American history to receive a US patent — granted in 1884 for her dough kneading and rolling machine that mechanized bread production. Almost nothing is known about her life beyond that patent record. A Black woman in 1884 America changed how the world made bread — and then history erased nearly every trace of her. The patent is almost all that survived.
