In 1884, a Black woman who couldn't read or write walked into the American patent system and walked out with a patent for a machine that mechanized bread production. She's widely credited as the first African American woman to receive a US patent. She signed the application with an "X." That patent, and a handful of census records, are almost all that survive of her.


Who Was Judy W. Reed?

Judy Woodford Reed was born around 1826, most likely in Virginia. The 1870 federal census finds her as a 44-year-old seamstress in Fredericksville Parish, near Charlottesville, in Albemarle County, Virginia, living with her husband Allen, a gardener, and their five children. Ten years later, the 1880 census shows the Reeds still in the same part of Virginia, now with a grandson in the household.

Sometime between 1880 and 1885, Allen Reed died. Judy, calling herself "widow of Allen," moved to Washington, D.C., where city directories place her living with her children at 1906 K Street NW. Census enumerators recorded both Judy and Allen as illiterate. It's unlikely she could read, write, or sign her own name in the conventional sense — which makes what she did next remarkable.

The Invention That Changed Everything

Hand-kneading dough is exhausting, slow, and limits how much bread one person can produce in a day. It also leaves dough exposed to dust and contamination during the process. Reed designed an improvement on existing dough rollers: two intermeshed rollers carved with corrugated slats that kneaded the dough more evenly as it passed through, feeding into a covered receptacle that protected it from airborne dust and particles while it worked.

She filed for a patent, and on September 23, 1884, received US Patent No. 305,474 for her "Dough Kneader and Roller." Unable to sign her own name, she marked the application with an "X." It remains one of only a small handful of documents that prove she existed at all.

She is widely credited as the first African American woman to receive a US patent — though that claim comes with real uncertainty. Patents in this era didn't record race, and many women inventors used only their initials to obscure their gender from a skeptical patent office, so it's genuinely unknown whether any Black woman received a patent before her. What's more clearly documented is that Reed was the first Black woman known to receive a patent without being able to fully sign her own name — that distinction belongs to Sarah E. Goode of Chicago, who patented a folding cabinet-bed the following year, in 1885.

What History Did With Her Name

Beyond her patent and a few census entries, there is essentially no record of Judy W. Reed. No obituary has been found. No account of what she did in the two decades after 1884, though some records suggest she lived until around 1905. The historical institutions that might have preserved her story simply didn't consider a formerly illiterate, formerly enslaved Black woman's life worth recording.

What is certain: she was there. She invented something real and technically sound enough to earn a federal patent, in an era and a system that offered her no advantages and every obstacle. And then she disappeared from the record almost entirely.

Why It Still Matters

Reed's story sits at the intersection of two enormous gaps in American history: the erasure of Black inventors, and the erasure of Black women's contributions specifically. The mechanization of bread production that her patent contributed to eventually helped make bread cheap, consistent, and available at industrial scale — feeding generations. The woman at the beginning of that thread is almost invisible in the historical record. That invisibility is exactly what Buillth exists to push back against.
