Every cataract surgery performed with laser technology owes something to Patricia Bath, a Black ophthalmologist most people have never heard of. Her Laserphaco Probe, patented in 1988, gave sight back to people who had been blind for decades — and made her the first Black female doctor to hold a U.S. medical patent.
