Andrew Jackson Beard was born enslaved. After emancipation, he built businesses, filed patents on plows and steam engines, and — after losing a leg in a coupling accident himself — patented an improved automatic railroad car coupler in 1897. He sold the patent for $50,000. History barely remembers his name.
